SABAE, Fukui Prefecture—A replica of the vintage round glasses worn by the protagonist in Studio Ghibli Inc.’s newest anime film, “Kaze Tachinu” (The Wind Rises), the final work of retiring acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki, is apparently back in style and selling well.
The spectacles are being produced by Nova Optics Inc., a glasses design company in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, and are on sale in the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo.
“The (reproduced) glasses are exactly what we were hoping for. We could feel the accurate skills of the craftsman,” said an official of the Ghibli Museum.
Nova designer Yasuhiro Kobayashi reproduced the glasses by examining and memorizing the storyboards, the visual guides for the film, which could not be brought out from Studio Ghibli.
